This is a perfectly reasonable question — after all, "tailored" suggests it should be a one-shot deal. In reality, however, taking measurements captures only "static data," while alterations are about transforming that data into "dynamic comfort." Even top-tier master tailors rarely skip the fine-tuning stage entirely. There are five main reasons for this:

1. The human body is "dynamic," not a "mannequin": When measurements are taken, you typically stand straight and still. But once you put on the uniform, you need to sit, raise your arms, and bend over. Three-dimensional contours (such as a hunched back or rounded shoulders) and "movement allowances" cannot be captured by a tape measure alone. 4. Psychological calibration of visual proportions: Data-perfect fit does not always equate to "visual perfection." For instance, the shoulder width might be correct, but visually it may appear slouched; the garment length might be accurate, but it may make the wearer look short-legged. Alterations are often about meeting the client's subjective expectations regarding their overall appearance — something that cannot be calculated by formulas.
5. Professional fitting process (muslin try-on): In high-end tailoring, a "muslin" (a roughly stitched sample garment) is made first for you to try on and move around in. 100% wool suits shrink and wrinkle after washing due to the inherent properties of wool fibres, particularly the unique structure of their surface. As for what wool content to choose in order to avoid shrinkage from improper care, the answer depends on multiple factors — there is no single absolute number. The core approach is to select wool fabrics that have undergone "anti-shrink treatment," or to choose fabrics with a lower wool content blended with stable synthetic fibres.

💧 Why does severe shrinkage and wrinkling occur?

The problems associated with washing 100% pure wool suits stem mainly from two characteristics of wool fibres:

Felting (shrinkage): The surface of wool fibres is covered with a layer of scale-like cuticles that have a directional orientation. During washing, under the action of hot water, agitation, and friction, these scales open up and become interlocked and entangled with one another. This causes the fibres to draw closer together, resulting in a significant reduction in the overall size of the fabric. This process is known as "felting shrinkage." The higher the wool content, the greater the risk of this type of shrinkage.

Relaxation shrinkage: When wool is spun into fabric, the fibres are in a stretched state. Upon contact with water, the fibres relax and "spring back," causing the fabric to contract naturally. This is known as "relaxation shrinkage."

Wrinkling: Although wool has good elasticity, the fibre structure of 100% wool fabric changes upon contact with water. If the garment is not properly shaped and hung to dry after washing, it is prone to wrinkles that are difficult to remove.

To reduce the risk of shrinkage due to improper care, consider the following factors:

Focus on the "finishing process," not just the "wool content"

Choose "anti-shrink" or "machine-washable" wool: The most effective approach is to select fabrics that have undergone special treatment. For instance, "anti-shrink finishing" uses chemical processes to remove or partially soften the scale layer on the wool surface, greatly reducing the likelihood of felting shrinkage. Some brands have introduced "machine-washable wool" suit fabrics that employ this technology. Therefore, it is crucial to check the label for markings such as "anti-shrink" or "machine-washable."

Reference the shrinkage risks associated with different wool contents

• High wool content (above 70%): High shrinkage risk, with shrinkage rates potentially ranging from 5% to 10%. In the case of 100% pure wool, improper care can even result in shrinkage exceeding 8%. These fabrics are generally recommended for dry cleaning only.
• Medium wool content (30%–70%): Moderate risk, with shrinkage rates typically controllable within 3% to 5%. The addition of synthetic fibres such as polyester effectively limits the fibre contraction and enhances the dimensional stability of the fabric.

In summary, as a premium suiting material, 100% wool offers exceptional texture and drape, but sacrifices convenience in care and maintenance. If you prefer a suit that is easier to maintain and can withstand occasional washing, choosing a high-quality wool fabric that has undergone "anti-shrink treatment," or a fabric with a wool content in the range of 30%–70% blended with stabilising fibres such as polyester, would be a more practical choice.

For everyday uniform suits, a wool content of 30%–50% is commonly selected, making it easier for employees to launder their garments at home.
